Organized Sock Drawer – with a Few Random Items
Lately, my sock drawer has really been in need of some organizing.
Let me show you a picture of what it looked like before I decided to reorganize it…
Notice how everything is neatly folded. I have all my regular socks over to the left, my ankle socks on the right in front of that open box and my tights and fluffy thick socks in the open box.
I’m guessing it looks ok to you.
But, here’s the truth.
After having my daughter, who is now two, I sometimes find it hard to neatly put everything away at the end of the day. I just don’t always have the time.
What really happens is that I end up tossing them into the drawer with the intention to eventually get back to them. That “eventually” doesn’t happen for another few days and by then a few more socks have ended up joining the mess.
So I figured just stop folding them all together and either roll them into a ball or toss them into the drawer unfolded.
I gave that a try and it just looked messy to me. I wanted some type of organization.
So after moving things around a few times and thinking about what would make most sense I eventually came up with this…
Ok here we go…
Organized Sock Drawer with a Few Random Items
First, those random items.
I decided to use three different items to organize my sock drawer:
A plastic shoebox from the container store
A small organizer from the dollar tree
A few mini Sephora shopping bags (I used a total of 5 bags)
Let’s briefly talk about what I’m doing now so that it’s easier to put away the socks that I use every day (my regular socks and knee-highs).
I decided that the fastest way I can put them away, short of just tossing them in the drawer, was to roll them tightly together. (You can see them rolled up below in the finished pictures)
I love rolling small items.
I also do this with my scarves and I find that it’s faster and takes up less space compared to folding. (I also use this rolling method in this post where I organized my daughters outgrown clothes)
I also wanted to keep some separation between all of my different socks. I had a few ankle socks, tights, a few knee-high socks, some thicker fluffy socks that I only pull out on very cold nights and then of course, my regular socks.
So here’s how I ended up organizing everything:
My knee highs and regular socks ended up in the mini Sephora bags.
First, I cut the bags down to fit my drawer.
This step is optional but I also decided to place some good old scotch tape right along the rim of the bags to give them some extra protection. I was worried that after some time the bags would start falling apart from me pulling the socks in and out.
This was kind of hard for me to photograph for you but I’m hoping you can see what I did here. I’m just running it all around the edge and then folding it in so as to cover the top part of the bags.
Then I filled my bags.
Knee-high socks went in the top left-hand bag.
Regular socks went into the rest of the bags and I tried to keep similar colors together as best as possible.
Here you can see that they are now rolled up:
Now my tights (and a few extra items like shoelaces)
Those ended up in the shoebox from the container store.
I don’t reach for those items very often so I figured it made more sense to keep them in a closed container and then make use of the top part of the shoebox with the Dollar Tree container which you will see pictured below. I am also keeping them folded like they were before so not much is changing here aside from where they are being stored in the drawer.
Moving on to my ankle socks…
I’m now storing those in the Dollar Tree container.
I love these containers! I use them all around my house. You can see here in an older post how I would make use of them in our old apartment.
Keeping them in this container is so much nicer because there’s more room for them compared to where they were before and now I don’t even feel the need to neatly fold them. I just give them a half fold and that’s it.
So much better now!
As for my fluffy socks.
Those were to thick to go into the little bags so I just folded them and placed them right next to the top row of the Sephora bags (on the right-hand side)
Below you can see how I placed the shoebox under the dollar tree container. This really helped to open up some space and make it easier to get my socks in and out. Before it felt as if I was constantly forcing everything to fit.
Well, that’s it. I hope you enjoyed this and found a few ideas that can help you get your sock drawer organized too!
